Education Accreditation Agencies and Quality Assurance

Every education system needs an accrediting agency that monitors the quality and working of the academic system effectively. In every education system, there are public and private agencies looking at various aspects of Education- School and Higher education.

In Hungary, the higher education institutions and programs/courses are accredited by HAC or Hungarian Accreditation Committee. It is an independent body and proud member of International Network for Quality Assurance Agencies in Higher Education (INQAAHE). Also, HAC is a member of the CEENQA or Network of Central and Eastern European Quality Assurance Agencies in Higher Education which was founded in Krakow, Poland on October 13, 2001. The body was legally registered in Dusseldorf, Germany on July 4, 2011.

Role of HAC in Quality Assurance and Accreditation of Institutes and Programs

The agency is responsible for accrediting courses and institutions. It also evaluates the quality of teachers and research carried a Hungarian institutes. Quality assurance is dependent on repeated assessment of the curriculum after regular intervals, the requirements and the qualification of the teachers in each study programs of the various Hungarian institutions.

Establishment and Responsibilities of HAC

The Hungarian Accreditation Committee or HAC was established as per the country's first higher education law in 1993. It is an independent national body of specialists evaluating quality in education, artistic activities and research in higher education, and probing the functionality of the institutional quality development scheme, according to the 2005 Higher Education Act.

The Hungarian Accreditation Committee or HAC comprises of experts deputized by higher education institutions, employers and students, to make amendments and judgements about higher education courses and institutions both before they are recognised and again every five years. If the institutions or the courses do not meet the pre-determined criteria set by HAC then they are bound to be closed. HAC also supports institutions to enhance possible weaknesses and makes proposals for their improvement. 

The HAC or Hungarian Accreditation Committee publishes its institutional and courses accreditation policies and reports on its website www.mab.hu.

Students, institutes can refer their website to know if the higher education is as per the determined criteria of HAC. Any student who undergoes the programs from institutes that don’t follow the quality assurance criteria set by HAC will not be able to get recognized degrees.

Besides publishing studies and reviews of quality assurance issues, the ministry also publishes its standards and criteria, annual reports and other related information for the convenience of students and institutes.
